The Z4 coupe and roadster offer a different shade of gray paint for 2008, and the standard wheels grew an inch in the roadster's optional Sport Package. Otherwise, the Z4 models are completely unchanged for the 2008 model year. They're available both in base and high-performance M versions. The Z4 competes in the market directly with the Audi TT, Mercedes-Benz SLK, Porsche Boxster and even the Chevrolet Corvette. Ignoring price, other roadsters include the Mazda MX-5 Miata on the low end and the Mercedes SL-Class on the high.

The two-seat Z4 roadster uses a standard folding metal hardtop. Trim levels include the sDrive30i, turbocharged sDrive35i and high-performance sDrive35is. All three have standard Dynamic Drive Control, a feature that allows drivers to vary steering and accelerator settings to suit their tastes. Anyone considering the entry-level Z4 might cross-shop Nissan's redesigned 370Z; a loaded Z4, on the other hand, could compete with the Mercedes-Benz SLK, Audi TT or Porsche Boxster.

The heart of the new M5 is its all-new engine. This 560-horsepower, 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 produces 502 pounds-feet of torque, and it is the most powerful engine ever to reside in a mass-market BMW engine bay.

The rear-wheel-drive BMW 1 Series enters its fifth year on the market with a few visual changes, as well as a new higher-performance version from BMW's M division, dubbed the 1 Series M. Above the entry-level 128i is the 135i, whose compact dimensions and two-door layout give it few genuine competitors. The car comes as a coupe or convertible; shoppers might cross-shop the 135i with the Nissan 370Z, Infiniti G37 coupe or top-end versions of Detroit's muscle cars.

The rear-wheel-drive BMW 1 Series enters its fifth year on the market with a few visual changes, as well as a new higher-performance version from BMW's M division, dubbed the 1 Series M. At the other end of the lineup is the 128i, which is the least-expensive entry point to BMW's entire lineup. Available as a coupe or convertible, the compact 1 Series occupies a space with few competitors. The Nissan 370Z, Infiniti G37 coupe and top-end versions of Detroit's muscle cars come closest to filling out the competitive slate.
